Shivaji Rao belongs to Gaikwad family which has the origin in Kolhapur District, Karnataka – Maharastra border – almost 300 kms from Pune. The Gaikwad families were said to be the main safeguard of Sathrapati Shivaji’s rule. Some of them were later shifted to the state of Karnataka.

Ranoji Rao, father of Shivaji Rao was born in Natchikuppam which is just 3 kms from Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri District of Tamil Nadu. There are some relatives still in Natchikuppam and they are still
called by Gaikwad family.

Ram Bhai, mother of Shivaji Rao was born in an interior village of Kollhekal district (home town of Nagappa who is under the custody of Veerappan) which is now said to be in the district of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Since Ranoji Rao got the posting as Police Constable, the family was shifted from Natchikuppam to Anumanth Nagar, Bangalore, where Shivaji Rao was born on 12.12.1950.
