1987 was a golden year for our superstar Rajini. In that year, he acted in three films and they are Velaikaran, Oorkavalan and Manithan. All the films managed to surpass more than 100 days. Out of these films, Manithan did extraordinary business and it is one of the biggest super hit movies in our Superstars Carrier.

At that time, Nayagan created waves and the movie was one of the biggest break for Kamalhassan.  Nayagan received very good support from the public, media and film industry. For Manithan, it faced some negative comments and Kamal fans criticized the film as a Diwali cracker inside the movie.  Inspite of all the criticism, the film did extra-ordinary business and surpassed Nayagan collection in all centers.

The Opening was terrific and all the theaters were Houseful nearly a week.  Manithan was released in 6 theaters in the Chennai city and this was the first movie which crossed more than 50 days in 6 theaters in Chennai city.  It was a Record at that time.

Manithan succefully completed more than 100 days at the following theaters :
Chennai - Woodlands - 100 days
Chennai - Annai Abirami - 100 days
Chennai - Maharani - 100 days
Chennai - AVM Rajeswari - 100 days
Madurai – Central – 147 days
Kovai – Kanga - 100 days
Trichy – Prabath – 100 days
Tanjore - Raja – 100 days
Vellore – Apsara – 100 days

Manithan was shifted from Annai Abirami to Bala Abirami and completed 175 days with normal shows.

AVM celebrate the Silver Jubilee function in a grand manner by promoting eye donation awareness.  They invited Dr. Badrinath as a chief guest for this function.  There were thundering and overwhelming responses from Rajini fans once Rajini agreed to donate his eyes.  Dr. Badrinath thrilled and excited because he got sufficient applications for eye donation due to Rajini's participation. He was so happy to see such a crowd for the function and he thanked  Rajini and AVM for this social activity.

During the pre-release of Baba in 2002, Indian Express published an exclusive article about our Rajini titled as SUPER STAR OR A CULT FIGURE.  In that article, they mentioned that Nayagan had  overwhelming response however Manithan managed to surpass Nayagan collection and became Super hit. All this can happen due to Rajini's power.

AVM Saravanan Experiences about the Film Manithan :

They had a plan to produce the movie based on one of the famous writer novel.  During the discussion, Saravanan clarified to the writer stating that screenplay will be done by Panju Arunachalam and they will display his name under the STORY AND DIALOGUES.  But the writer did not accept the deal hence AVM decided to produce Director Guganathan’s story.  The base of the story titled as AMAVASAIL PIRANTHAVAN THIRUDAN.

They changed the title to MANITHAN.  But distributors felt sentimentally that this title will not suit to Rajini’s image and moreover one of the old movie which already released on this title and failed miserably.  But Saravanan clearly convinced the distributors by informing that it will be appropriate name as it reflects real Rajini who posses good attitude and great human being.

One of the Major Plus point in the movie was Chandra Bose Music.  Kalai Kalai and Vanatha Parthen were became instant hits and audio sales was terrific during that time.  Due to footage problem, they were not able to include the song MANITHAN MANITHAN.  Lyric writer Vairamuthu was disappointed after hearing this news.

One day, Rajini was taking bath in AVM studio and he heard "Manithan Manithan" song playing in AVM office. After his bath, he clarified about this song and they mentioned that the song was from Manithan and due to some reasons they were not able to shot the song and just added as 6th song in audio cassette.  Rajini immediately called SPM and requested him to include this song as a title song. Rajini gave few more days call sheet to shoot this song. The song was hit after the film was relaesed.
