Siva – Movie Review

Siva, released on 5 May 1989, is an action drama directed by Ameerjan and produced by K. Balachandar under Kavithalayaa Productions. The film stars Rajinikanth, Raghuvaran, Shobana, Janagaraj, Radharavi and Sowcar Janaki, with music by Ilaiyaraaja.

The story revolves around Siva (Rajinikanth) and John (Raghuvaran), childhood friends who share a close bond despite their religious differences. A tragic incident separates them and destroys their families, with Siva, John and John's mother each believing that the others are dead. Years later, they meet again without initially knowing their shared past, eventually joining hands to settle scores with those responsible for their suffering.

The friendship between Siva and John forms the emotional backbone of the film. Rajinikanth and Raghuvaran make an interesting combination, with Raghuvaran bringing intensity to his character and Rajinikanth providing the star power and screen presence expected from a Superstar film.

However, the film's biggest weakness is its excessive reliance on action. Fight follows fight, with gun battles, explosions and extended action sequences taking up a considerable portion of the film. After a point, the continuous fights become tiring. The story itself also requires a fair amount of suspension of disbelief, particularly the coincidences surrounding the separation and reunion of the main characters after many years.

Thankfully, the film becomes much more enjoyable when it moves away from the action. Rajinikanth's comedy, lighter moments and romance provide a welcome change. His chemistry with Shobana works well, and their romantic portions give the film some much-needed freshness amid the heavy action.

The emotional portions also add some depth to the otherwise action-heavy narrative. The family tragedy and the characters' search for their loved ones provide the film with an emotional foundation, even though the screenplay sometimes stretches credibility.

The real treat is Ilaiyaraaja's music. Songs like “Adi Vaanmathi,” “Ayya Ayyavo Un Appanthan” and “Ada Mappilla” are enjoyable both to hear and watch. The music, picturisation and the Rajinikanth–Shobana combination make these songs some of the most memorable portions of the film.

Siva is therefore a mixed bag. It has plenty of action and Rajinikanth's trademark style, but the excessive fight sequences and an occasionally unrealistic storyline prevent it from becoming a completely satisfying entertainer. At the same time, Rajinikanth's comedy and romance, Shobana's presence, Raghuvaran's performance and Ilaiyaraaja's excellent songs give the film enough enjoyable moments.

It may not rank among Rajinikanth's finest films, but Siva remains an interesting late-1980s entertainer and a nostalgic watch for fans of Rajinikanth and Ilaiyaraaja.

A heavy-action Rajini entertainer that works best when the Superstar gets to romance, joke and simply entertain.
