சிவாஜி – ரஜினி – விஷ்ணுவர்தன் இணைந்த படம்! ஆனால் ஒரிஜினல் குர்பானியின் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியதா?

1980-ல் இந்தியில் வெளியான குர்பானி திரைப்படத்தைத் தமிழில் தயாரிக்க முன்வந்தவர் தயாரிப்பாளர் கே. பாலாஜி. அவருடைய தயாரிப்பில், கே. விஜயன் இயக்கத்தில் உருவான படம்தான் விடுதலை. சிவாஜி கணேசன், ரஜினிகாந்த், விஷ்ணுவர்தன், மாதவி எனப் பெரிய நட்சத்திரப் பட்டாளமே இப்படத்தில் இணைந்திருந்தது. இத்தனை முக்கியமான நடிகர்கள் இருந்தும், குர்பானி படத்தில் இருந்த விறுவிறுப்பையும் தாக்கத்தையும் விடுதலை முழுமையாக எட்ட முடியவில்லை என்பதே உண்மை.

Viduthalai (1986) is a Tamil-language action thriller directed by K. Vijayan and starring Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth and Vishnuvardhan in the lead roles. Produced by K. Balaji, the film is a remake of the Hindi film Qurbani (1980), which was itself inspired by the Italian film The Master Touch (1972).

The film brings together three celebrated performers from different generations of Indian cinema. Sivaji Ganesan plays Inspector Rajasingam, a shrewd police officer with a jovial side, while Vishnuvardhan portrays Amar, a criminal seeking to break away from his past. Rajinikanth plays Raja, a skilled thief whose life takes a complicated turn when friendship, love and betrayal become intertwined.

A Story of Crime, Friendship and Sacrifice

Raja is an expert thief who falls in love with Radha, a nightclub dancer and singer who knows nothing about his criminal activities. His life takes a dramatic turn when he agrees to rob the treasury of crime boss Sudarshan at the request of Vikram and his sister Bhairavi, who are seeking revenge against Sudarshan. However, Raja is caught by Inspector Rajasingam and sentenced to two years in prison, leaving Radha devastated.

Meanwhile, Amar, a senior member of Sudarshan's gang, decides to turn against his employer. A widower with a young daughter, Amar gradually develops feelings for Radha, but she remains devoted to Raja. Their paths eventually cross when Raja is released from prison, setting the stage for an unlikely friendship.

When Vikram's men kidnap Amar's daughter and assault him, Raja agrees to carry out another robbery in exchange for their safety. As Raja nurses Amar back to health, the two men develop a strong bond. They plan one final heist, hoping to escape their criminal past and begin a new life abroad.

However, their carefully planned scheme goes wrong. Raja is arrested for Sudarshan's murder while Amar and Radha escape with the money. Believing that his friend has betrayed him, Raja escapes from prison and sets out to confront Amar in London. The misunderstanding is eventually resolved, but Vikram and his men arrive seeking revenge. In the final confrontation, Amar sacrifices his life to save Raja, giving the story an emotional conclusion centred on friendship and loyalty.

Rajinikanth as Raja

Rajinikanth brings his familiar screen presence to the role of Raja, a character who combines criminal expertise with emotional vulnerability. His portrayal is central to the film's action sequences and dramatic conflicts. Raja's transformation from a skilled thief into a man caught between love, suspicion and friendship provides the film with much of its dramatic momentum.

The character also gives Rajinikanth opportunities to display his characteristic style and screen charisma, particularly during confrontations and moments of tension.

Sivaji Ganesan and Vishnuvardhan

Sivaji Ganesan is an important attraction as Inspector Rajasingam. His character is not merely a conventional police officer; his jovial yet sharp-witted nature adds personality to the investigation and the film's dramatic proceedings.

Vishnuvardhan's Amar serves as the emotional counterpoint to Raja. Initially involved in organised crime, Amar gradually reveals a more compassionate side through his relationship with his daughter and his feelings for Radha. Madhavi plays Radha, the woman caught between the two men, while Vijayakumar and Anuradha portray the antagonistic siblings Vikram and Bhairavi. The supporting cast, including K. Balaji, Y. G. Mahendra, Thengai Srinivasan and Baby Shalini, adds further colour to the narrative.

Music by Chandrabose

The soundtrack, composed by Chandrabose with lyrics by Vaali and Pulamaipithan, is one of the film's notable features. The songs include "Nattukulla Namma Pathi", "Raagam Naanethan", "Rajave Raja", "Neela Kuyilgal Rendu" and "Thangamani Rangamani".

Among them, "Neela Kuyilgal Rendu" became a memorable song from the film. The soundtrack provides a musical contrast to the crime-driven narrative, adding romance and lighter moments to the proceedings.

Production and Direction

Producer K. Balaji decided to remake Qurbani in Tamil after watching the Hindi film. His casting plan brought Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth together, with Rajini taking the role associated with Feroz Khan and Sivaji playing the character associated with Amjad Khan. The dialogues were written by Aaroor Das, while K. Vijayan directed the film.

The premise offers a combination of crime, romance, police investigation, action and emotional drama. Its focus on two criminals whose friendship is tested by suspicion and circumstances gives the story a stronger emotional dimension beyond the heist itself.

The Verdict

Viduthalai brings together Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth and Vishnuvardhan in a crime drama built around robbery, love, friendship and sacrifice. Rajinikanth's stylish presence, Sivaji Ganesan's experienced performance and Vishnuvardhan's emotionally driven character form the film's principal attractions. Chandrabose's music, particularly "Neela Kuyilgal Rendu", adds to its appeal.

Despite its promising cast and dramatic storyline, the film received mixed reviews and failed at the box office. Nevertheless, Viduthalai remains notable for bringing these three prominent actors together in a Tamil remake of Qurbani, with the friendship between Raja and Amar providing its emotional centre.
